Sudan Gurung: Introduction, Personal life, Contribution, and Keynotes

Introduction

Fig. Sudan Gurung

Sudan Gurung is a Nepali activist, best known as one of the prominent faces of the 2025 Gen Z protests in Nepal, which were sparked by a government ban on many social media platforms. He is the President of Hami Nepal, a youth-/civic-NGO that has gained visibility for mobilizing youth, especially in contexts of social media freedom and rights.

Personal Life

  • He is reported to be in his mid‐thirties (around 36-38 years old) as of the 2025 protests.
  • Before his activism, Sudan Gurung had various roles, including being a DJ / nightclub owner.
  • The 2015 Nepal earthquake had a strong impact on him personally; some reports say he lost a child in that disaster. That traumatic experience contributed to his shift toward humanitarian, relief, and later civic activism.

Contribution / Role in the Protests & Civic Life

  • Under his leadership, Hami Nepal has been instrumental in organizing and coordinating protest activity among Gen Z youth. The NGO used social media platforms (Instagram, Discord, etc.) to spread awareness, mobilize people, and coordinate actions.
  • Gurung has become a symbolic figure: through speeches, organizing, and being visible as a face of the movement, he represents youth demands for transparency, political accountability, freedom of expression, and resistance to corruption and nepotism.
  • The protest under his influence and coordination led to several major outcomes: the government lifting the social media ban, the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and a broader conversation around governance reforms.
