Nepal First Female PM: Introduction, Personal life, Education, Career, Political role, Literary career, and Keynotes

Introduction

Sushila Karki was appointed as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal on 12 September 2025, becoming the first woman in Nepal’s history to lead the government. Her appointment came following widespread protests (led largely by Generation Z) that challenged the previous administration over corruption, social media censorship, youth unemployment, and nepotism. Before becoming interim PM, she had served as the Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court (2016–2017), and is the only woman to have held that post before her PM role.

Personal Life

  • Birth: She was born on 7 June 1952 in Shankarpur, Biratnagar, Morang District, Nepal. She is the eldest of seven siblings.
  • Family: Married to Durga Prasad Subedi, who was her tutor during her studies in India. They have at least one child.
  • Language & Skills: In addition to her native Nepali, she speaks English and some Hindi.

Education

  • Undergraduate: Bachelor of Arts from Mahendra Morang Campus, Biratnagar (1972).
  • Master’s: Master’s degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University (India) in 1975.
  • Law Degree: LLB (Bachelor of Laws) from Tribhuvan University in 1978.

Career

Early Career

  • Began legal practice in Biratnagar in 1979.
  • Also worked as an assistant teacher at Mahendra Multiple Campus, Dharan, around 1985.

Judicial Career

  • Appointed Ad-Hoc Justice of the Supreme Court in January 2009; became a permanent Justice later.
  • Elevated to Chief Justice of Nepal on 11 July 2016, the first woman in that role. Her term as Chief Justice ended in June 2017.
  • During her tenure, she gained a reputation for strict anti-corruption rulings and judicial independence. She faced an impeachment motion in 2017 by some political parties, but the motion was withdrawn under public pressure and judicial intervention.

Political Role (As Interim PM)

  • Her appointment as interim Prime Minister is seen as an outcome of massive protests, especially by Gen Z youth, demanding accountability, transparency, and reform.
  • Based on the constitution (Article 61), she was chosen by President Ram Chandra Poudel after consultations. Her government is transitional in nature, intended to stabilize governance and prepare for the next steps (elections or forming a new government).

Literary Career

  • Sushila Karki has also authored two books:
    1. Nyaya (her autobiography) was published in 2018.
    2. Kara, a novel published in 2019, was inspired in part by her own experiences, including her incarceration during the Panchayat regime.

Keynotes

  • Her reputation for integrity, judicial independence, and a strong stance against corruption played a major role in public trust and her selection as interim PM.
  • She has no prior experience as a party politician or in long-term governance; her strength is a legal and judicial background rather than political maneuvering.
  • Her interim role is crucial during a very fragile and volatile political moment in Nepal, following protests over civil rights, governance, and social media censorship. Her leadership is seen as a bridge until more permanent arrangements can take place.
  • Her appointment is symbolic: it marks a milestone for women in Nepal, both in the judiciary and executive branches.
  • Challenges ahead: restoring stability, responding to protesters’ demands (anti-corruption, transparency), managing administrative transition, and possibly supervising free/fair elections or forming a stable government.
