Dharahara: Introduction, Facility, Location, Gallery, and Keynotes

Introduction

Dharahara, also known as the Bhimsen Stambha, is the architectural symbol of Nepalese resilience located in Kathmandu. Originally constructed in 1832 by Mukhtiyar Bhimsen Thapa under the commission of Queen Lalit Tripurasundari, it originally served as a military watchtower.

The landmark has survived and succumbed to multiple major disasters, including the earthquakes of 1834, 1934, and the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25, 2015. Following a national reconstruction campaign, the new, modern replica tower stands fully completed.

Facilities

The reconstructed complex expands across 42.2 ropanis and features several modern infrastructure elements:

  • Observation Deck: A glass-enclosed viewing tier on the 20th floor providing 360-degree panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley.
  • Dual Elevators: Added alongside a new internal staircase for seamless accessibility.
  • Three-Floor Underground Parking: Accommodates up to 400 four-wheelers and 700 two-wheelers.
  • Memorial Park: Features the glass-enclosed, preserved structural ruins of the original 1832 tower stump.
  • On-site Museum & Water Spout: Preserves cultural artifacts alongside a restored historical fountain garden.
  • Accessibility Infrastructure: Fully equipped with wheelchair-accessible entrances, restrooms, and parking lots.

3. Location

The tower sits dynamically in the exact geographic core of the city at Sundhara, Kathmandu, Nepal.

  • Coordinates & Access: Found right on Sundhara Road. It is within walking distance of central hubs like the New Road commercial sector and the Kathmandu Central Bus Park.
