Spiny Gourd(Momordica dioica): Introduction, and Top 10 Health Benefits

Introduction

Spiny Gourd (Momordica dioica), commonly known in India as Kantola, Kakrol, or Kartoli, is a nutritious, underutilized vegetable from the Cucurbitaceae family. It is a seasonal, perennial climber that produces small, green, spiky fruits, mostly during the monsoon season.

It is widely used in Indian and South Asian cuisine, often prepared as a stir-fry, curry, or stuffed dish. Unlike its relative, the bitter gourd, the spiny gourd has a milder, sweeter taste.

Top 10 Health Benefits of Spiny Gourd (Kantola)

Spiny gourd is recognized as a functional food with significant nutritional and therapeutic value, containing high amounts of protein, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and minerals.

  1. Regulates Blood Sugar (Antidiabetic): Rich in plant insulin and high in fiber, it aids in controlling diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels.
  2. Boosts Immunity: High concentrations of Vitamin C and various antioxidants help strengthen the immune system against seasonal infections like coughs, colds, and flu.
  3. Protects the Liver: Spiny gourd has anti-lipid peroxidative properties and is a rich source of flavonoids, which help prevent oxidation of fats and protect the liver from toxicity.
  4. Aids Digestion: High soluble fiber content helps with constipation, stomach ulcers, and overall gastrointestinal health.
  5. Promotes Weight Loss: It is very low in calories (roughly 17-25 kcal per 100g) but high in water and fiber, making it excellent for weight management diets.
  6. Improves Eye Health: It is known to contain the highest amount of carotenoids (such as Lutein and beta-carotene) among cucurbitaceous vegetables, aiding in the prevention of eye diseases and improving eyesight.
  7. Manages Hypertension and Heart Health: The fruit helps reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and supports better heart health, while its fiber regulates blood pressure.
  8. Promotes Skin Health: Its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties fight against free radicals, helping to reduce acne, eczema, and skin infections.
  9. Anti-aging and Anti-cancer Properties: Compounds like triterpenoids and flavonoids provide antioxidant protection against oxidative stress and have shown potential in inhibiting cancer cell growth.
  10. Respiratory Health: Traditionally, it is used to alleviate breathing problems, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
