Lapsi (Choerospondias axillaris), commonly known as Nepalese Hog Plum, is a traditional fruit native to Nepal and the Himalayan region. Widely enjoyed for its tangy-sweet taste, lapsi is used in pickles, candies, jams, and chutneys. Beyond its culinary appeal, it is a nutrient-dense fruit rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and minerals, making it valuable for immunity, digestion, and skin health. Known locally as a natural immune booster, lapsi plays an important role in both the Nepali diet and traditional medicine (Ayurveda).

Lapsi belongs to the Anacardiaceae family, the same family as mango and cashew. The fruit is oval or round, green when unripe and yellowish-brown when ripe, with a fibrous pulp and hard seed. It is packed with vitamin C, iron, calcium, phosphorus, and dietary fiber. The fruit contains organic acids (citric and malic acid) that aid digestion and provide its characteristic sour flavor. Lapsi also contains polyphenols and antioxidants that protect against oxidative stress and strengthen the body’s defense system.
