Introduction

Water chestnut, locally known as Singhara, is an aquatic fruit widely consumed across Asia, especially in Nepal, India, and China. It belongs to the genus Trapa and is scientifically known as Trapa natans.

Water chestnut grows in freshwater ponds, lakes, and rivers, forming floating rosettes of green leaves and submerged stems bearing triangular fruits with hard shells.
The edible part is a white, starchy kernel, consumed raw, boiled, or ground into flour (singhara atta) during fasting or religious occasions.
Nutritionally, it is rich in vitamin B6, potassium, manganese, antioxidants, carbohydrates, and polyphenols, while being low in fat and calories. It also contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds that promote internal balance and wellness.
