10 Health and Nutrition Benefits of Walnuts(Okhar): Introduction, Description, and Keynotes

Introduction

Fig. Walnuts (Okhar)

Walnuts (Okhar – Juglans regia) are one of the most nutrient-dense nuts, valued for their rich taste, brain-shaped appearance, and exceptional health benefits. Native to Central Asia and the Himalayan regions, walnuts are commonly cultivated in Nepal. They are a powerful source of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, making them a “superfood” for the heart, brain, and overall well-being. Regular consumption of walnuts helps reduce inflammation, improve cognition, and promote long-term metabolic and cardiovascular health.

Description

Walnuts belong to the Juglandaceae family and are encased in a hard, wrinkled shell with a soft edible kernel inside. Nutritionally, walnuts are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA – a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid), vitamin E, B-complex vitamins, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and fiber. They also contain polyphenols, melatonin, and ellagic acid, which exhibit strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of this diverse nutrient composition, walnuts play a vital role in promoting heart, brain, bone, and reproductive health.
